I would recommend "flexible dieting", determine their daily macros to hit their goals and log everything they eat into MyFitnessPal to hold themselves accountable. Devote an hour a day to exercise. Just like any athlete or business owner, I recommend hiring a coach to guide you on proper exercises and diet as this will sustain for your entire life. It's also much easier if your partner lives the lifestyle with you and it's never too late to start!
I find I have much more energy and I can do many things others my age can't do (hiking steep terrain, snow skiing) because of my conditioning. I love the fact that others who have seen my journey have been inspired to jump into the lifestyle and even enter fitness competitions with me. I've had Chrohn's disease for 16 years and my diet & exercise regime has made a dramatic impact on lessening the symptoms as well.
I would love to surprise my family with a trip to Europe for being so supportive over the years while I embarked in this quest to become an IFBB Fitness Pro. It's not easy and it takes a Team effort to accomplish. I know many others who don't have the support system I do and I appreciate all that they do.
